Karen Clark Portrait

Teaching Style and Philosophy

"Singing is an adjustment between mind and movement."
                                                     ___ Giovanni B. Lamperti

In my studio, I join vocal exercises with movement lessons that improve the singer's kinesthetic awareness. Practicing becomes an opportunity to explore and clarify your sensations. Use what you learn to let the color and vigor of your own true voice emerge!

Each lesson is tailored to your specific needs and objectives and, typically, takes place on my specially designed Feldenkrais table. For example, Feldenkrais Functional Integration® and Awareness Through Movement® lessons are used to clarify the relationship between posture and breathing; the independence of the speech articulators; and in the exploration of resonance and tone color.

In Functional Integration, I use gentle, non-invasive manipulations to stimulate the skeletal connections between the bones and joints. In Awareness Through Movement lessons, the student is verbally guided in a series of movement sequences that are built around a specific theme.

Learn how to free yourself from tension producing habits.
Improve tone production and consistency.
Find ease and increased comfort in performing.
Embody, express, and enjoy the song, the dance, the music.

"Karen is a skilled and articulate teacher who approaches musical training from a deep understanding of the body. Her work is so effective because she looks at the singer not just as a voice but as a whole person." ______Charles Moulton, Choreographer
